After a convenient hotel pick-up from the Las Vegas Strip, we will tour the engineering feat that is the Hoover Dam, a national historic landmark on the mighty Colorado River, only a short distance from the entertainment capital of the world.
The Hoover Dam, built during the Great Depression, took 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete to construct, thus creating an immense fresh water reservoir spanning 245 square miles in surface area. Providing water to 8,000,000 people and agriculture in Arizona, California, and Nevada, the Hoover Dam continues to play an essential role for regional economies.
During your tour you will be treated to the best views from both the Arizona and Nevada sides of the Colorado River. The almost 900ft tall Mike O’Callaghan/Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge now offers the highest accessible overlook of the Dam and Black Canyon, an amazing sight previously only enjoyed by helicopter.
Your tour of this modern civil engineering marvel includes the visitor center with its museum, exhibits and observation deck, as well as a walk across the massive crest. Stunning Lake Mead vistas and breathtaking views from the Memorial Bridge conclude our on-site exploration. Before returning to the hotel though, another iconic photo opportunity awaits that is not to be missed.
As one the most recognizable designs in history, nothing advertises the desert metropolis like the famous Googie style “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. Greeting car-bound travelers from the west coast since the late 1950s, this is your chance to have that one-of-a-kind picture taken right in front of Sin City’s best known landmark.

REAL REVIEWS FROM OUR GUESTS
As fascinating as the Hoover Dam is, what really made the trip amazing was our driver. He was friendly and polite, and shared his wealth of knowledge about Las Vegas history and the current economy of the area on our drive to the dam (which made the drive fly by). He shared a lot of information and history about the dam, and drove us through Boulder City while pointing out the historic buildings, and the plants and trees that are native to the desert. He quickly learned the names of all of the members of the small group on our trip, and offered to take pictures for all of us any time we stopped at the overlook spots at the dam. Thank you , best tour guide I've ever met!
Best way to see Hoover Dam is with Detours Nevada! My husband and I picked this small-group tour because we didn't want to go on a cattle car tour bus. It was amazing, our guide picked us up promptly at our hotel, we stopped at two other hotels for more people, then headed towards Hoover Dam. Our guide was friendly and very informative. We picked the early tour because we wanted to miss the crowds and it worked out well. Hoover Dam, Boulder City, and Lake Mead are amazing sites. This is the tour you need to do while visiting Las Vegas. We will be using Detours Nevada again.
This was a great part of my weekend in Vegas. The driver/guide offered lots of information about local history and development on the way, and suggestions about making the most of the Hoover Dam. Snacks and water were welcome. Information about pick-up, etc., timely and clear. Highly recommended.
The elevators down to the power plant of the Hoover Dam are currently closed due to maintenance. You will still have plenty of time for photos of the dam from the memorial bridge and the Visitor Center to see the museum, exhibits and observation deck. We have added a photo stop at the famous “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign in place of the power plant tour.
Pick up times range from 8am-9am. We will contact you between 4pm-6pm the evening before to let you know your exact pick up time.
Weather appropriate clothing, camera, sunscreen, snacks, government issued ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
We recommend closed-toed shoes year round. During the winter, we recommend pants and jackets.
These are all approximations, please check the weather prior to your tour. Summer temperatures range from 90-110 degrees fahrenheit. Spring and fall temperatures range from 60-90 degrees fahrenheit. Winter temperatures range from 40-50 degrees fahrenheit.
No, the elevator to the power plant is closed due to maintenance. You will visit the Visitors Center where you can watch a short film and see views of the dam from the Mike O’Callaghan/Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.
