TOUR ITINERARY

Great Basin National Park Tour from Las Vegas
The Big Three Tour from Las Vegas

Day 1:

With an early departure to beat the heat of summer, our journey heads into Southern Utah to view Snow Canyon State Park’s fascinating lava tubes and petroglyphs. We’ll also pay a visit to Mountain Meadows Massacre Site, the location of a tragic tale that still haunts the area’s inhabitants. A picnic lunch at Cathedral Gorge State Park is the perfect setting before exploring the narrow maze of canyons where erosion has carved dramatic and unique patterns in the soft clay. The park’s beauty began with explosive volcanic activity that deposited layers of ash hundreds of feet thick with each eruption. While you’re there, check out the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Site where they processed the rich silver ore from surrounding mines, an incredible remnant of the mining days of the late 1800’s. The adventures takes a pause here as we enjoy a dinner together and relax for the remainder of the evening.

Overnight at La Quinta Inn and Suites, Ely, NV

Day 2:

Today, we’ll journey to Great Basin National Park and cruise on a breathtaking, scenic drive to the Wheeler Peak campground, located at 9,886 feet in elevation. Here, you can enjoy a picnic lunch and leisurely stroll through the aspens or, for those wanting a more of a challenge, a 2.8 mile round trip (roughly 2 hour) hike to see the magical Bristlecone Pine Forest, where the oldest trees in the world twist majestically atop the breathtaking Wheeler Peak. Then, we will take our explorations underground with a ranger-guided tour to marvel at the gravity defying stalagmites and stalactites of the Lehman Caves. We’ll end the day in Ely where you can view colorful murals or visit the White Pine County Museum.

Overnight at La Quinta Inn and Suites, Ely, NV

Day 3:

To start the morning, we’ll visit the Nevada Northern Railway National Historic Landmark in Ely, the sole survivor from the Grand Era of Railroading in the state. Our journey then takes us across scenic Currant Summit to Lunar Crater National Natural Landmark, a zone of volcanic activity covering over 100 square miles. Comprised of cinder cones, outcrops of lava, elongated fissures, ash hills and, most visibly, the 430 foot deep Lunar Crater, this is an impressive and rather unexpected site in an otherwise isolated, windswept location. Wild horses, antelope, and wild donkeys from the mining days still wander the area.

We’ll then travel along the edge of Area 51 and along the Extra Terrestrial Highway, past the Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, where millions of migrating birds take advantage of this lush desert wetlands throughout the year. In the late afternoon, our journey ends in Las Vegas, just in time for some well-deserved rest or to continue the fun on The Strip!
