Because DETOURS travels with a maximum of 13 passengers, this allows us to take a flexible approach and take full advantage of touring opportunities in the American West.

Due to the developing tourism industry in the area, changes can and do occur in this type of program. Weather conditions, sometimes severe enough to limit where we can drive or walk, can also alter the program. As visitors, we will respect this, and remain flexible and open to local conditions, safety concerns and unforeseen opportunities. Our guides will do their best to keep things on track and in the event that our schedule changes, they will try to keep disruption to a minimum, consider your wishes, and organize other options as far as it is reasonable and practical to do so.

Betatakin Cliff Dwellings | DETOURS Native America

Day 1 (included in tour cost):

Arrive in sunny Phoenix, AZ where your guide will meet you for an informal welcome drink at the airport and discuss the upcoming tour. Transportation will be provided to Tempe Mission Palms so you can settle in and get a good night’s rest before the four-day tour departs on August 22nd.

Day 2:

After a beautiful drive through the Arizona Sonoran Desert, we’ll have a brief look at Montezuma’s Castle National Monument. This was one of the first four sites that Theodore Roosevelt identified in the Antiquities Act in 1906, enacted to preserve and protect the historical and cultural significance of each. It’s a testament to the Sinagua culture’s 400 year presence in this ‘oasis’ along Beaver Creek. Horseshoe Bend is next and offers one of the most iconic views of the Colorado River. A short walk to the overlook will leave you breathless. The Lake Powell Resort is our first night out and offers unparalleled views of the buttes and islands, enhanced when we board the tour boat to tour Lower Antelope Canyon through the twisting and turning sandstone formations.

Overnight at Lake Powell Resort in Page, AZ

Day 3:

To start the day, we’ll join our Navajo guide to hike Lower Antelope Canyon and experience one of the most beautiful slot canyons in the southwest. The honey-colored slots are a special place for the Navajo, much like a cathedral, and very much a spiritual experience for many. The next tour stop will be Navajo National Monument where we will enjoy a peaceful walk along the Sandal Trail to the Betatakin Ruins overlook for awe-inspiring views of an ancient civilization. On to Monument Valley for a tour into the heart of this collection of spires and monuments in the late afternoon light. We’ll take our time to experience this timeless western destination, away from the crowds.

Overnight at Goulding’s Lodge in Monument Valley

Day 4:

After an optional sunrise walk and breakfast we’ll head north into Utah to visit the Sand island Petroglyph site along the San Juan River, a wealth of ancient rock art. Our small group will travel south again to Chinle for an afternoon at the Central Navajo Fair for arts, crafts, dances and local food. This represents an authentic tribal experience, and your guide will lead the way. This is a flexible day so the guide can ensure the best access to the event for a day to remember. Thunderbird Lodge is at the mouth of Canyon de Chelly and is the perfect base for our visit.

Day 5:

We’ll join our Navajo guide for an early morning tour of Canyon de Chelly into the twists, turns and ruins deep into the canyon. Many locals continue to live and farm the canyon, so our visit will show appropriate respect to their home. Another visit to the Central Navajo Fair to enjoy a beautiful Native American celebration before a scenic drive to Hubbell Trading Post. Built in 1878, Hubbell Trading Post is the oldest operating trading post on the Navajo Nation. The local Navajo continue to trade here, which makes it a living Historic Site. Finally onto Route 66 and Winslow, Arizona for our final night at the famous La Posada Hotel. The location is significant as it sits on Route 66, the original highway system of the United States. Relax for a hosted dinner tonight to celebrate the journey, and plan the next one!

Overnight at La Posada Hotel in Winslow, AZ

Day 6:

Today we’ll travel west to Flagstaff along Route 66 and into the scenic Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona for lunch. The famous red rock formations surrounding Sedona are some of the most photographed on earth. Many people believe that the area is a vortex, allowing energy to either enter or project out of the Earth’s plane. Only you can decide if that energy is real! The return to the Phoenix area takes us back through the Sonoran Desert and finally to the Valley of the Sun to connect you to your flight or continue your visit at a local resort. Return home refreshed and renewed after this celebratory trip!
